The Results

“Since its inception in 2016, the Kumul Petroleum Academy has trained more than 180 Papua New Guineans through its programs. The Safe Live Process Plant has been central to this success – providing a realistic, hands-on environment that builds technical competence, confidence, and a strong commitment to safety among our graduates.”

Live-process training for PNG’s oil & gas future.

Site Skills partnered with KPA & Kumul Petroleum to engineer, build and operate the Safe Live Processing Plant (SLPP) – a full-size process facility enabling PNG nationals to train on site-realistic systems.

The Challenge

PNG’s oil & gas and resources sector required a localised technical workforce trained to international standards. Without high-fidelity training infrastructure, the country faced high reliance on imported skills and elevated costs. KPA needed to deliver “live-work environment” training in process operations, control systems and trades for PNG nationals to participate meaningfully.

Our Solution

Purpose-Built Live Process Plant – Site Skills designed and delivered the Safe Live Processing Plant (SLPP), replicating full-sized processing equipment, control room, emergency protection systems and electrical distribution to provide realistic, hands-on training.

Industry-Standard Environment, with Local Focus – Training delivered in a safe, controlled setting that mimics live site operations, enabling trainees from PNG to gain relevant practical exposure and improve time-to-competence.

Integrated Competency-Based Programmes – 12-month blended learning courses covering mechanical, electrical and PNG standards.

Scalable Training Infrastructure – KPA expansion at Caution Bay to train 350-400 participants, with capability for large-cohort deliveries to meet PNG’s workforce pipeline

Training Programs

Process Operations & Control Systems – Training on live process flow, startup and shutdown procedures, control-room operation, instrumentation, and emergency management using a fully functional distributed control system (DCS)

Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation Trades – Hands-on competency development across mechanical maintenance, electrical systems, instrumentation calibration, and fault diagnosis within an operational plant environment.

Safety, Isolation & Emergency Response – Practical training in lockout/tagout, hazard identification, confined-space entry, and fire and gas safety systems – reinforcing safe work practices in high-risk industrial settings.

Workforce Readiness & Technical Communication – Focused modules on teamwork, problem-solving, and workplace communication to prepare graduates for employment in oil, gas, and process industries, both in PNG and internationally.
